Untitled Space Warrior – An Exploration of Self

Original Painting by Chris Shopland
Acrylic on 20 × 25.2 cm cradled wooden panel

We often forget that we are floating in space—an idea so surreal it almost feels like an elaborate hoax. And yet, it’s undeniably real. This piece is inspired by that paradox, by the vastness of the cosmos and the even greater mystery of the self.

At times, I find myself daydreaming of uncharted worlds, places where I might belong beyond this mortal coil. But perhaps the world is bigger than we realise, and our true tribe exists in the most unexpected places.

The astronaut figures—both space man and space woman—symbolise our ongoing journey of discovery. We know so little about the universe, just as we know so little about ourselves. True actualisation is never complete; we must keep exploring, questioning, and seeking.

A thought-provoking and introspective piece for dreamers, explorers, and those drawn to the mysteries of existence.

My favourite book is hitch hikers guide to the galaxy and I feel this quote by its author Douglas Adams sums it up beautifully.

“
The fact that we live at the bottom of a deep gravity well, on the surface of a gas covered planet going around a nuclear fireball 90 million miles away and think this to be normal is obviously some indication of how skewed our perspective tends to be”

Plus astronauts are super fun to stylise and add artistic license to.
