Dream Catcher with Abstract Background – Mixed Media: Oil, Acrylic, and Ink by Bristol-based Artist Chris Shopland

Description:

This unique artwork, Dream Catcher with Abstract Background, is a mixed media piece by Bristol-based artist Chris Shopland. It combines oil, acrylic, and ink, blending abstract expressionism with symbolic representation. Created using a palette knife technique, this painting showcases a fascinating mix of textures and colours that evoke a sense of calm and peace. The dreamcatcher motif symbolises protection, catching nightmares before they reach you, while the abstract background adds depth and intrigue.

This piece holds a personal history, painted over an old ink and oil painting. The layering process results in an artwork with both visual and historical complexity. I often wonder what an X-ray might reveal beneath the surface, as the original oil painting I have long forgotten what it was of.

What makes this piece even more interesting is its defiance of traditional painting rules: typically, oil can only be applied over acrylic, but this artwork was created by layering acrylic over oil that had dried for over 5 years. Despite the risks, this method has stood the test of time, as the painting was completed in 2015, and nearly a decade later, it remains as vibrant as ever.

Though I’ve always favoured some form of representation in my art, this work ventures into abstraction with the background, offering both a personal challenge and artistic exploration. Perhaps one day, I’ll fully embrace the abstract journey for a series of works, until then I am playing with the relationship between the two.

Dimensions: 61 cm square
Location: Created by Chris Shopland, based in Bristol, UK

This artwork makes an excellent addition to any space, providing a sense of tranquility, peace, and protection. As a Bristol-based artist, I take pride in being apart of the dynamic art scene and artist community.

Please Note: Colours may appear differently on computer screens due to monitor settings. I have done my best to represent the original colours as accurately as possible. In most cases they are even better in real life than via the screen.
